I just tried installing it and it worked very well, looks great to me
The comment below is outdated! -- FCKEditor, starting at v2.5, generates proper XHTML 1.1.
So... FCKEditor is new school too! ;)
I've tried (on Windows and Linux) pretty much all web WYSIWYG editors out there, and this is the only one that works flawlessly and has an array of features.
Highly recommended.
Take a look at WYM editor. It does not create ugly html code. It uses proper xhtml and works with your stylesheets. FCK is old school.

I've tested all the others (open source) and they are far behind this one.
This probably has one of the worse install info. Good luck with it.
Besides the inconvinient install and manual adjust of the paths, this is the best editor for rails.
